Crypto Aggressions: The Gendarmerie Details Its Strategy Against the Surge in Kidnappings

Don’t touch the gray money. The gray money now resides in a digital wallet. And criminals are no longer just touching it: they are kidnapping its owner to obtain it. These are armed and masked commandos. Some are briefed thousands of kilometers away from their target, in France, since the Ledger case that opened this dark series in January 2025. The national gendarmerie today documents, in two Gendinfo articles signed by Commander Céline Morin, the entire architecture set up to respond to this. From DNA collection at the scene of a kidnapping to freezing the ransom a few hours after its payment.

Key points of this article:

  • Crypto kidnappings have exploded in France, partly due to a data leak at Waltio, exposing thousands of cryptocurrency holders.
  • The French gendarmerie has implemented a coordinated response involving specialized units to counter these kidnappings, with operations often compared to military raids.

Crypto Kidnappings: A Phenomenon Exploding Since the Waltio Leak

The term appeared in 2017. It wasn’t until late 2024 that it became a public order issue. The National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office counts 135 cases related to kidnappings or attempts since 2023, including 47 cases opened since January 2026 alone. An event related to cryptocurrency holdings now occurs every two or three days.

The cause largely stems from a data leak at Waltio, a French company that assists with tax declarations for crypto assets. Indeed, the names and addresses of tens of thousands of clients were exposed overnight. Add in low-cost recruitment on Snapchat and Telegram, sponsors based abroad, and inexperienced executors serving as mere labor. You get a criminal industry running at full speed. Colonel Patrick Pegeot, head of operations at the National Judicial Police Unit (UNPJ), summarizes the problem in one sentence:

"Holding cryptocurrencies is like having a bank at home, but without any physical security.".

UNPJ, GIGN, UNCyber: The Gendarmerie's Arsenal Against Crypto Kidnappings

In the face of this deluge of cases, the gendarmerie has built a command chain resembling that of a military raid. The National Operations Center coordinates. The Operations Monitoring and Conduct Group brings together specialized units. The Operational Command Post builds the strategy specific to each kidnapping. On the ground, the Observation Force from GIGN monitors the kidnapper and surveys the area with a thermal drone, before the Intervention Force acts, often at multiple sites simultaneously to prevent any information leaks from derailing the operation. The GIGN deploys an average of 50 soldiers per kidnapping, supported by 14 territorial antennas.

Lieutenant Colonel Bastien commands the Intervention Force. He summarizes the objective bluntly: "The main point remains the same: to locate the criminals and hostages as quickly as possible, then intervene very quickly." He describes the assault itself as a "steamroller", designed to stun the kidnappers before they can harm the hostage. While the GIGN neutralizes, an investigator from the crypto assets group of UNCyber remains stationed at the command post. A second investigator, based in Pontoise, tracks the ransom in real-time on the blockchain. He coordinates its blocking with exchange platforms. The group also practices demixing, a technique that involves piercing through mixers meant to obscure the origin of stolen funds.

The Case of Yonne: When GIGN Neutralizes a Crypto Kidnapping in Less Than 24 Hours

On April 13, 2026, a mother and her son were kidnapped in Yonne for a ransom of €400,000 in cryptocurrencies. The father held about $450,000 in staking, funds locked to generate returns. The sponsor forced their unlocking and seized the seed. The crypto assets group managed to block the management rights of the wallet nonetheless. A technical maneuver never accomplished before, including by Europol.

The hostages were released in less than 24 hours. Eight people were arrested, and the funds remain frozen. Lieutenant Julien, who leads the crypto assets group, also specifies that UNCyber antennas are also implanted within certain local research sections, with which his team maintains constant contact. International cooperation, however, remains the most fragile link. Most sponsors operate from abroad, out of the immediate reach of the French gendarmerie.

In Yonne, the battle was therefore not only fought in the street at the time of the assault. It was fought on the blockchain, in the minutes that followed the payment of the ransom. The Minister of the Interior drew his own political conclusion by launching a security response. It is now up to the gendarmerie to prove, case by case, that holding cryptocurrencies at home no longer needs to turn into a nightmare.
