U.S. Federal Prosecutors Charge Man in Money Laundering Scheme Worth Tens of Millions of Dollars

U.S. federal prosecutors have charged a Vietnamese national for involvement in a sophisticated investment and romance scam known as pig butchering, which has been spreading globally.

The cryptocurrency wallet allegedly managed by the defendant is said to have received illicit funds amounting to tens of millions of dollars, and authorities are working to clarify the details and the network involved. The charges stem from a massive investment dispute surrounding a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform called Triangle.

According to investigators, a victim firmly believed they were investing through this platform between June and August 2024, transferring approximately $16 million (about 2.5 billion yen) worth of cryptocurrency in multiple transactions. However, when they attempted to withdraw their invested funds and profits, they discovered that withdrawals were impossible.

Investigations revealed that part of the assets sent by this victim had flowed into the cryptocurrency wallet managed by Trung Nguyen Van, the defendant. For instance, in just a few days in early August of the same year, the same victim made several transfers totaling over $560,000 (about 88 million yen), most of which were subsequently transferred in smaller amounts to another personal wallet.

Uncovering Over $53 Million in Massive Fund Transfers

The investigation is not limited to the Triangle case. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, further tracking of Van's wallet revealed that from February 2018 to December 2024, he received approximately $53.3 million (about 8.4 billion yen) from a series of communication fraud schemes targeting U.S. citizens.

Most of the large assets received were subsequently transferred in units of about $53.2 million to other accounts or destinations, with prosecutors arguing that this constitutes a typical process of organized money laundering.

Reports of similar fraud have also been received from other victims in the U.S., who, although using different website names, reported being lured online and deceived into believing in high returns, only to have their funds stolen.

The Expanding Tactics of Pig Butchering

The tactics being cracked down on by authorities are widely known as "pig butchering" or a type of romance scam.

This involves members of a fraud group building long-term trust with targets through social media, dating apps, and messaging tools, and then luring them into false investment schemes once sufficient trust is established.

R. Matthew Price, a federal prosecutor in the Western District of Missouri, pointed out that such scams have become increasingly rampant and the methods more sophisticated in recent years, warning that they have stolen billions of dollars in assets from many people worldwide.

Following his appearance in the Los Angeles federal court, Van has been charged with two counts of money laundering in the federal district court for the Western District of Missouri.

Characteristics of Blockchain and Future Prospects

Cryptocurrencies, which can transfer large amounts of value instantly across borders, have been misused for many cybercrimes and hiding funds. However, the transaction history and wallet address records etched on the blockchain can serve as definitive evidence that makes complete concealment difficult.

Nonetheless, there are often cases where assets are complexly subdivided through multiple wallets, mixing tools, and decentralized services before law enforcement agencies can detect the situation. Investigative agencies, including the FBI, are enhancing their investigative capabilities using analytical techniques tailored to the behavior of blockchain to combat such digital-age crimes.

At this stage, the criminal charges are still at the level of suspicion, and Van is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. This case highlights the seriousness of modern cryptocurrency crimes, both in terms of the scale of individual losses and the networks behind them.
