Dollar savings purchases in July reached the highest level since elections, a third remained 'under the mattress'
The purchase of dollars by individuals reached its highest level in July since the legislative elections of 2025. One third of what was acquired remained 'under the mattress', reflecting greater caution among savers. The Central Bank (BCRA) reported that in July, the purchase of cash and currencies 'for unspecified purposes' reached 3.461 billion dollars, a record since October 2025 and 42% more than in June. Regarding cash, 1.7 million people made purchases, representing a growth of nearly 200,000 individuals compared to the previous month. There were 697,000 sellers recorded, with a decrease of more than 20,000 people. Including net sales from companies, the net outflow of dollars was 3 billion dollars. According to the BCRA, 33% of this amount was accounted for as Formation of External Assets (FAE), the highest percentage since October of last year. Only 33% remained in local banks, the lowest since February of this year, while the remaining third was allocated to expenses with cards abroad.
