El Salvador's Chivo Relaunches with Leadership from Visa and JP Morgan Alumni
El Salvador's digital asset wallet 'Chivo' is set to relaunch as a private-led comprehensive financial platform. Executives from Visa and JP Morgan will oversee operations, offering free remittances, microloans, cash services, and debit card payments, with plans to enhance financial accessibility. Lingard Labs has secured management rights for the Chivo wallet through a public-private partnership agreement with the El Salvador government. Chivo was launched in 2021 alongside the introduction of Bitcoin, with the government providing users with $30 worth of Bitcoin at that time. However, remittances using Bitcoin accounted for less than 1% of the total remittance volume in El Salvador. Lingard Labs plans to expand Chivo's role from digital asset storage and remittance to include loans and everyday payments. A key feature of the new Chivo will be credit services utilizing users' wallet transaction histories, providing microloans and cash services. Additionally, the remittance service will implement a no-fee policy and introduce a payment service that offers cashback benefits. Lingard Labs has expressed a positive stance on its collaboration with the El Salvador government.
