The European Central Bank plans to issue the digital euro for the first time in the second half of 2029. The initial applications will cover all online stores in the eurozone, some physical retail stores, and direct transfers between individuals. This move aims to accelerate the establishment of a digital payment system that encompasses online, offline, and personal payment scenarios. The document states that the digital euro will support both online and offline transactions, with functionalities for in-store payments and personal transfers being launched simultaneously. Previously, in-store payments were not included in the initial rollout plan for the digital euro.
