FOMC Decision Oct 28, 2026: Scenarios for Stocks, Bitcoin and Gold

By: WEEX|10/27/2026 09:40:00
The Fed announces its decision on October 28 at 18:00 UTC. A hold is the widely discussed baseline, which shifts attention to the details: the vote split, the wording on inflation and how the press conference treats December. This preview sets out four scenarios and the paths each could take into rate expectations, stocks, Bitcoin and gold. It does not predict the decision or any price.

TL;DR

  • Baseline: Market commentary expects the Fed to hold at 3.75%–4.00%. A decision that matches expectations can still move markets if the details differ.
  • Three details to read: the vote split, the wording on inflation and the press conference's handling of December.
  • Transmission: Rate expectations influence yields, yields influence how long-dated growth is valued, and risk appetite can carry that into Bitcoin. Gold responds to real yields and defensive demand.
  • Caution: These are possible paths, not a forecast. Co-movement does not establish causation.

What Is Different About the October 2026 FOMC Meeting?

October is not a scheduled Summary of Economic Projections meeting. The next scheduled projections accompany the December 8–9 meeting. The external communications blackout runs from October 17 through October 29 and restricts certain policy communications. The scheduled statement and press conference still take place.

Without a new scheduled dot plot, the wording of the statement and explanations in the press conference deserve particular attention. A lack of guidance is also information; it should not be converted into a commitment to a particular December decision.

What Should You Read in the October FOMC Statement?

  1. The vote split. September's decision was unanimous at 12–0. In July, three members dissented in favor of a hike. A hold with several dissents sends a different message from a unanimous hold.
  2. The wording on inflation. A change in how the statement describes inflation is the kind of signal markets can read as a shift in tone, even when the rate does not move.
  3. The December signal. The press conference is where the chair can say how the committee is thinking about the next meeting, or decline to.

What Are the Possible FOMC Scenarios on October 28?

The table lists possible readings, not predictions. Several scenarios can occur together.
Scenario
What it could look like
Possible effect on rate expectations
Possible read-through
Hold with a similar tone
Rate unchanged; little change in language
Limited repricing if expectations are met
Stocks and BTC may react modestly; earnings could matter more. Gold may respond mainly to real yields and defensive demand.
Hold with a firmer tone
Stronger inflation concern or dissents favoring a hike
Further tightening may receive more weight
Higher yields could pressure growth valuations and risk appetite. Gold may face real-yield pressure, offset by defensive demand.
Hold with a more patient tone
Greater emphasis on waiting for evidence
Further tightening may receive less weight
Lower yields could support valuations and BTC risk appetite. Gold could benefit if real yields fall.
Rate increase
Policy range rises against the cited hold baseline
Immediate repricing is possible; the future path still matters
Stocks, BTC and gold could react sharply, with direction depending on the surprise, explanation and yield response.

How Could the FOMC Decision Affect Stocks, Bitcoin and Gold?

Stocks. All else equal, a higher discount rate lowers the present value of future cash flows. Companies whose valuations rely more heavily on distant earnings can be particularly sensitive. Actual stock performance also depends on earnings, cash generation, financing and what was already priced in.
Bitcoin. Policy surprises can affect risk appetite, financial conditions and fund flows. Crypto-specific developments may reinforce or offset those effects. A move concentrated in Bitcoin calls for checking crypto news, but does not rule out a macro influence.
Gold. Gold pays no interest, so changes in real yields can alter the cost of holding it. Defensive demand can pull the other way, so gold does not always react in the direction a simple rate story implies.
The scenarios above are a map, not a forecast. Past reactions to Fed decisions vary from meeting to meeting, and a small number of events does not make a rule. Markets can move in either direction after any decision.

How Do You Separate the Fed's Reaction From Earnings?

On the same evening, Alphabet holds its call at 20:30 UTC and Microsoft at 21:30 UTC, according to the companies' announcements. Both come after the statement and press conference. A practical way to separate the two:
  1. Note where yields and rate-expectation tools stand right after 18:00 UTC.
  2. Check whether markets moved again after the press conference at 18:30 UTC.
  3. Compare any later move with the earnings releases, using the same window for Bitcoin, equities and gold.

A move that begins before the earnings releases is more consistent with a rate story. A move that begins after them is more consistent with company news.

Compare stock reactions with WEEX Stock Dice Rush
A Fed decision can affect the wider market without moving every stock equally. Company earnings, financing needs and sensitivity to rates can produce different reactions. That makes relative performance another useful question: which of two stocks will perform better over the same session?
WEEX Stock Dice Rush brings that question into daily stock matchups. Eligible participants can register, earn dice through qualifying tasks, roll across the board for rewards and event points, and commit points to one of the two selected stocks.
The stock with the higher percentage change during the specified regular-session window wins. If both fall, the smaller decline wins. Premarket and after-hours prices are excluded, and submitted selections and point commitments cannot be changed.
Explore Stock Dice Rush for available matchups, task requirements, rewards and the applicable selection and settlement windows. The event runs from October 7 to November 3, 2026 (UTC+8). Matchups compare stock performance; they do not settle on the Fed decision itself.

FAQ

What is the Fed expected to do at the October 2026 FOMC meeting?

Market commentary expects the Fed to hold the target range at 3.75%–4.00%, according to Babypips as of 02:08 UTC on October 27, 2026. A hold is an expectation, not a certainty, and the details of the statement and the press conference can still move markets.

Is there a new dot plot at the October FOMC meeting?

No. October is not a Summary of Economic Projections meeting. The next one comes with the meeting on December 8–9.

Why does the FOMC vote split matter?

The vote shows how united the committee is. September's hike passed 12–0, while July's hold came with three dissents in favor of a hike. A hold with dissents can read differently from a unanimous hold.

How can the FOMC decision affect Bitcoin?

Mainly through risk appetite, liquidity conditions and fund flows. Bitcoin also reacts to crypto-specific news, so a move that happens alone points to different causes from one that matches equities. Co-movement does not establish causation.

How can the FOMC decision affect stocks?

Higher expected rates raise the discount rate applied to future earnings. That tends to matter more for large technology and AI-related companies than for companies with near-term cash flows. The size of the effect varies from meeting to meeting.

Why can gold react differently from stocks and Bitcoin?

Gold pays no interest, so changes in real yields can alter the cost of holding it. Defensive demand can pull the other way. The two forces do not always point in the same direction.
