Interest Rate Raised to 3.00%, Driven by Semiconductor Boom
The Bank of Korea's Monetary Policy Committee raised the benchmark interest rate from 2.75% to 3.00% on August 27, an increase of 0.25 percentage points. The strong performance of the semiconductor industry has boosted growth prospects, with inflationary pressures and financial stability risks serving as key factors in the rate decision. This decision marks the second consecutive increase following the rise from 2.50% to 2.75% on July 16. The Bank of Korea projected this year's consumer price inflation rate at 2.7% and next year's at 2.3%, while core inflation is expected to be 2.5% for both years. The semiconductor sector is expected to drive exports and investments, and improvements in income conditions are likely to lead to a recovery in consumption. Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong explained that the strong semiconductor market is a major variable in assessing inflation and growth. The interest rate hike is intended to increase borrowing costs, thereby reducing consumption and investment, and the Bank of Korea decided to raise the benchmark rate before inflationary pressures become more widespread. However, Monetary Policy Committee member Hwang Geon-il argued that maintaining the benchmark rate at 2.75% would be preferable. The Bank of Korea is concerned about rising housing prices in the metropolitan area and increasing household debt, and plans to monitor inflation trends, economic conditions, and financial stability in future monetary policy decisions.
