Jennifer McAdam invested £8,700 inherited from her father into the cryptocurrency OneCoin, and together with family and friends, lost over £217,000. After being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, she closed her consulting business and believed in OneCoin's promises as a technological revolution. Upon realizing that the project was a scam, she began warning other investors, which led to threats and attempts to intimidate her. In 2017, she received a cease-and-desist letter regarding her criticism of the project. It is estimated that around 70,000 people in the UK invested in OneCoin, losing a total of over £100 million. Ruja Ignatova, the creator of OneCoin, disappeared in 2017 and is still wanted by the FBI, which is offering a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to her arrest. The U.S. Department of Justice plans to allocate about $40 million for compensation to the victims.
