Artificial Intelligence Sets New Record by Matching the World's Best Young Mathematicians

Artificial Intelligence has taken another step that few imagined possible just a few years ago. For the first time, a model achieved a perfect score at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2026, the most prestigious competition in the world for secondary students with exceptional talent in this discipline. This result allowed AI to achieve exactly the same performance as the small group of participants who correctly solved all six problems of the competition.

In the 2026 edition, 666 students from 117 countries participated, but only seven competitors achieved the maximum score. For the first time, this small group was joined by an Artificial Intelligence system, developed to face exactly the same challenge.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is considered the most prestigious tournament for secondary level students. Each country selects a small group of representatives after a long process of national qualification and specialized training.

Over two consecutive days, participants must solve six completely original problems. Each exercise is worth seven points, making the maximum possible score 42. What differentiates this competition from other exams is that it is not enough to write the correct result: each solution must include a complete logical demonstration, capable of justifying step by step the procedure used.

On this occasion, the models developed by Huawei and Xiaohongshu (RedNote) successfully completed all the exercises proposed by the organization, achieving the maximum score of the competition. The performance was evaluated using the same criteria applied to human participants, allowing for a direct comparison between both.

The result caught the attention of the scientific community because it demonstrates a significant leap compared to the capabilities observed just a year earlier. Until now, the most advanced models could solve a large part of the exercises but still showed errors in the more complex problems or presented incomplete demonstrations. In 2026, that barrier was overcome for the first time.

For researchers, the performance achieved is a demonstration that the most advanced models can now tackle problems that require complex logical reasoning and construct demonstrations with a level of precision far superior to what they showed just a few years ago.

Until recently, the greatest strength of Artificial Intelligence was linked to language processing, text generation, or analyzing large volumes of information. Olympic mathematics, on the other hand, presents a completely different challenge: each problem requires discovering an original strategy, connecting different concepts, and justifying each step of the resolution without leaving inconsistencies. For this reason, the IMO is one of the most demanding indicators for measuring the progress of these systems.

The speed at which these models evolved was reflected in the comparison with recent editions of the competition. In 2025, various tech companies celebrated that their systems achieved a performance equivalent to a gold medal, a result that was already considered extraordinary. Just a year later, Artificial Intelligence managed to match the perfect score reserved for a very small number of human competitors.

The advancement also reflects the intense competition that exists among the leading companies in the sector. On this occasion, the models developed by Huawei and Xiaohongshu (RedNote) achieved the highest performance, showing that the race to develop increasingly capable systems is no longer concentrated solely in American companies and that Asian developers also occupy a prominent place in Artificial Intelligence research.
