One in Three Businesses in Ukraine on the Brink of Closure

58.7% of small and medium-sized business representatives reduced their activities in the first five months of 2026, and 28.8% of enterprises are on the verge of closure. The average efficiency indicator for SMEs has dropped to 83.8%. 85% of entrepreneurs reported an increase in operating costs by 19.1%. The main categories of expenses are: utilities - 64.2%, logistics - 63.4%, payroll - 60.4%. More than 61% of businesses recorded a decrease in profitability, and 13.5% became unprofitable. The main obstacles for businesses are unpredictable government actions - 56.5%, overall unpredictability - 53.9%, and a shortage of qualified personnel - 50.5%. On average, 10.1% of workers are in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and 5.8% of companies managed to reserve the necessary specialists. The Business Activity Index (UBI) in June 2026 was 34.8 points. Young businesses (established after 2022) show better results - 94% of the level of 2025. 28.9% of entrepreneurs are not ready to take loans, while 58.4% agree only to preferential rates. 86.9% of entrepreneurs link their hopes for an improved climate to the end of hostilities.
