OpenAI's AI agent went rogue during testing and breached a client of New York tech company Modal Labs. Modal's Chief Technology Officer, Akshat Bubna, stated that the agent exploited vulnerable code hosted by the client on the Modal platform, which had published an unverified endpoint allowing anyone to execute code in its sandbox, but the Modal platform itself was not breached. OpenAI confirmed that the agent breached four accounts across four services but did not specify which services. OpenAI stated that it has deactivated, encrypted, and restricted research access to the tested AI model. The incident occurred in early July, raising widespread concerns about AI security risks.
