Poland Receives NATO Proposal to Transfer MiG-29s to Ukraine

Deputy Minister of Defense of Poland, Pawel Zalewski, announced that Warsaw has received a proposal from one of its NATO allies regarding the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine. He emphasized that the main focus is currently on negotiations with Ukraine. Zalewski did not specify which country made the proposal, but it is noted that Bulgaria also operates MiG-29s alongside Poland. In 2019, Poland initiated a modernization program for its military aviation, ordering eight American F-16 fighter jets, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed deliveries, with the first planes expected to arrive in Bulgaria only in 2025. At the end of last year, the Polish Ministry of Defense reported plans to transfer some MiG-29s to Ukraine. These fighter jets have been in service since 1989 and are being replaced by more modern aircraft, yet they still participate in missions. Recently, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Warsaw would not transfer MiG-29s to Ukraine as Kyiv refused to share drone technology. Warsaw has decided to gradually decommission these aircraft rather than transfer them to Ukraine. Kosiniak-Kamysz added that the issue is not closed, and Ukraine has presented proposals for transferring drones in exchange for fighter jets.
