Research Shows Fear & Greed Index Is Not a Reliable Trading Tool

The Fear & Greed Index, a popular gauge of sentiment in the cryptocurrency market, was studied to determine whether it provides a reliable trading signal. Researchers analyzed 2,945 days of Bitcoin data from February 2018 to February 2026. The results showed that extreme fear does not yield a reliable buying opportunity, while extreme greed does not provide a clear selling signal either. On days of 'Extreme Greed', the average returns were the highest: after one day, Bitcoin increased by an average of 0.36 percent, after a week by 3.8 percent, and after thirty days by more than 13 percent. This suggests that a strong market can continue to rise for a longer period, but extreme greed does not guarantee a price increase. Similarly, extreme fear was not an indication that the bottom had been reached. The simulation of using the index as a trading strategy yielded no reliable advantage, leading researchers to conclude that the index is primarily useful for tracking market sentiment but not as a standalone buy or sell signal.
