Semiconductor Silicon Wafer Prices Rise by Approximately 10%, Benefiting Taiwanese Companies like GlobalWafers
The price of semiconductor silicon wafers has seen a significant increase for the first time in over three years, rising by approximately 10% across all specifications, including 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch wafers. Major Taiwanese silicon wafer suppliers such as GlobalWafers, TSMC, and Silitech are expected to improve their revenue and profits as a result. GlobalWafers stated that demand in some end markets has gradually improved, the inventory adjustments in the supply chain are healthier, and market signals are more positive than last year, although prices still depend on the product, specifications, and customer situations. TSMC mentioned that it has begun discussions with customers regarding price adjustments due to cost pressures and demand support, and operations in the second half of the year are expected to outperform the first half. Silitech indicated that it is actively negotiating price adjustments with customers and continuing to promote advanced packaging and related products. Industry analysis suggests that this round of price increases mainly reflects the rebound in chip demand driven by AI, with increased usage in both advanced and mature processes, leading the silicon wafer industry to gradually feel a recovery. Currently, the negotiation progress varies among manufacturers and customers, with some 12-inch polished wafers already seeing new quotes applicable to double-digit percentage increases, and discussions for 8-inch and 6-inch products are also moving in a similar upward direction.
