Severe Weather in Brazil Leaves Five Dead Due to Winds of Up to 125 km/h
A severe storm in southeastern Brazil has caused at least five deaths due to gusts of wind reaching up to 125 km/h in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In Rio de Janeiro, gusts reached 100 km/h, resulting in fallen trees, power outages, and the suspension of transportation services. Two people died after a wall collapsed in Santa Teresa, and a fisherman is missing in Tarituba. In São Paulo, winds of up to 124 km/h led to the deaths of two men crushed by trees, and another fisherman died after his boat capsized. The weather conditions led to the temporary suspension of all three metro lines in Rio and affected operations at Santos Dumont Airport, which was closed for approximately two hours. The port of Santos also halted operations momentarily. Firefighters reported that over 90 trees were uprooted in Rio, and although there were interruptions in the electricity supply, service was largely restored during the day. The meteorological phenomenon was associated with the advance of an oceanic cold front.
