Spanish Police Arrest 16-Year-Old Boy Linked to KillSec Ransomware Gang
Spanish police have arrested a 16-year-old Romanian suspect in Alicante, believed to be an administrator of the ransomware gang KillSec. In this operation, two other suspects in their twenties were arrested in the UK and Romania, while another developer who had just turned 18 was not arrested due to some crimes occurring during his minor years. The operation, codenamed Operation KillSwitch, was led by the Hamburg State Criminal Police in Germany and involved investigations into approximately 1,000 suspected attacks worldwide, with about 500 confirmed successful intrusions. Law enforcement searched eight locations in Spain, Greece, Romania, and the UK, seized five central servers, redirected related domain names to a seizure notice page, and confiscated at least 110 TB of stolen data. KillSec has been active since 2024, exploiting software vulnerabilities and insufficient cloud storage security to infiltrate corporate systems, copy internal data, and threaten to leak it on dark web sites in exchange for cryptocurrency ransom. The Swiss Federal Police noted that the gang employs a double extortion tactic, first encrypting servers and then applying pressure. U.S. prosecutors charged Dutch national Fouad Eltibrizi, residing in the UK, who was indicted and arrested on September 16, facing a maximum of 10 years in prison. The European Cybercrime Centre is assisting in tracing cryptocurrency funds and conducting digital forensics.
