Standard Chartered Launches Continuous Tokenized Deposits in Hong Kong

By: journalducoin.com|11/03/2026 14:00:00

Corporate money is no longer idle. On Monday, November 2, Standard Chartered announced the launch of its tokenized deposit service for businesses in Hong Kong. This is the first market in its global network to benefit from it. Transfers between partner banks operate 24/7, at a time when 88% of large companies already report using stablecoins or tokenized deposits.

Key Points of This Article:

  • Standard Chartered opens its tokenized deposits in Hong Kong, the first market in its global network.
  • Transfers between partner banks operate 24/7 via EnsembleTX, the HKMA's platform.
  • China AMC, Finloop, and PantherTrade have already settled real transactions, including tokenized money market funds.
  • Fireblocks and HashKey join the initiative, and the bank promises more markets.

How Does This Tokenized Deposit Work?

A tokenized deposit remains an ordinary bank deposit, simply represented by a token on a shared ledger. The client retains their claim on the bank, with the usual guarantees.

The difference lies in the timing: a treasurer can move funds between subsidiaries on a Sunday evening, without waiting for the settlement window the next morning. For example, a payment initiated at 3 AM is executed immediately.

For two years, the Hong Kong financial market has been preparing for this shift under the watchful eye of the HKMA, its monetary regulator. The infrastructure of the latter, EnsembleTX, already connects banks for real-value operations.

The mechanism combines two components. The bank's internal blockchain holds deposits on the client side, while the EnsembleTX platform circulates tokens between institutions.

Interbank settlements can be conducted in central bank money, including wholesale CBDC, the central bank digital currency reserved for financial institutions. This foundation is intended to enhance the reliability of exchanges and reduce counterparty exposure. Access remains restricted to corporate treasurers, financial institutions, investment platforms, and digital asset players.

The gain is measured in treasuries, where some companies pre-finance their accounts days in advance to align with banking hours. Continuous settlement chips away at these liquidity reserves, along with the associated financing costs.

An Ecosystem Already in Motion

Already, the first transactions are real. China AMC, Finloop, and PantherTrade have settled tokenized deposits via EnsembleTX, transactions that also included tokenized money market funds.

Around these players, the ecosystem is expanding. Fireblocks integrates banking services into its digital asset platform, and HashKey joins the initiative.

According to Ole Matthiessen, global head of transactional services and digital assets at the bank, the goal is to embed digital currency into cash flow and investment streams. Existing banking controls remain in place. The Leviathan News account relayed the announcement.

This launch builds on a history. As early as December 2025, the bank unveiled a blockchain deposit solution with Ant International, in Hong Kong dollars, offshore yuan, and US dollars. In August 2026, it completed a transaction with HSBC via a Swift blockchain ledger.

The public foundation is not new either. The HKMA has been testing tokenized transactions since 2024 with Project Ensemble, of which EnsembleTX is the operational phase, open to real-value operations.

Last September, the regulator was preparing continuous settlements in wholesale CBDC. The trials focused on exchange fund bonds, for a volume exceeding 1.3 trillion Hong Kong dollars.

On its part, the bank is advancing on stablecoins. Its joint venture Anchorpoint has been deploying a regulated stablecoin pegged to the Hong Kong dollar for institutional investors since August. This is a path similar to that of Ripple, which received an A2 rating from Moody's for its own.

We had also seen the bank anticipate a shift of institutions towards DEXs. Tokenized deposits extend this strategy, keeping clients within the regulated fold with tokens at market speed.

Meanwhile, each major exchange is financing its own digital currency, while the digital euro from the ECB remains under construction. Standard Chartered promises more markets after Hong Kong. The banking currency, however, has already stopped napping.
