Tech Companies Like Anthropic Seek Religious Guidance on AI Ethics
Tech companies like Anthropic are consulting philosophers and religious leaders to explore the ethical judgments of AI models. Anthropic has engaged with scholars, clergy, philosophers, and ethicists from over 15 religious and cross-cultural groups, discussing topics such as personhood, moral judgment, and children's use of chatbots. Representatives from Meta, Google, and Amazon have also reached out to the Vatican. Anthropic emphasizes that this initiative is not about having Claude adhere to a specific religious worldview, but rather about gaining a deeper understanding of various perspectives, including religious, secular, and political views. Scholars interviewed warn that simplifying religion into extractable moral rules may overlook the differences between traditions and their cultural contexts, and could even amplify the influence of specific traditions.
