A 9-Hour Nightmare: Family Held Hostage for Cryptocurrency

Brothers Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, based in Waller, Texas, have been sentenced to federal prison.

Raymond received a sentence of 180 months (15 years), while Isiah was sentenced to 186 months (15 years and 6 months), totaling over 30 years in prison. In a trial led by Judge Donovan Wayne Frank of the federal district court, the two pleaded guilty to charges of robbery affecting interstate commerce and were also ordered to pay full restitution exceeding $8 million (approximately 1.26 billion yen).

The incident occurred on September 19, 2025. The brothers traveled from Texas to the victim's home in Grant, Minnesota, targeting cryptocurrency. They ambushed the father as he took out the trash. They then broke into the house, restraining the entire family with zip ties. Armed with weapons including an AR-15 rifle, they continued to threaten the family for over nine hours.

When the amount received from the initial transfer fell short of expectations, Isiah threatened the father and forced him into a car, driving about three hours to a cabin in northern Minnesota. There, they made him retrieve a hardware wallet stored on-site and transfer all remaining assets to their control account. Meanwhile, Raymond stayed behind to monitor the remaining family members.

Fast Food Receipts Reveal Footprints and Arrest Details

After the cryptocurrency theft, the robbery plan fell apart due to unexpected evidence left behind. Following a 911 call from the victim's son, law enforcement arrived at the scene, prompting the brothers to attempt to flee. However, a suitcase recovered from nearby trees contained disassembled rifles, ammunition, and a Wendy's receipt.

Using this receipt as a starting point, investigators thoroughly tracked the rental car's movements, GPS data, and surveillance camera footage. The brothers' home and surrounding areas in Texas were quickly identified. Additionally, statements made during a traffic stop in Oklahoma and the serial number verification of firearms left at the home strengthened the evidence, leading to their arrest through a joint investigation by the FBI and the local sheriff's office.

The Threat and Background of Ransom Attacks Exploiting Leaked Data

The victim pointed out that information about his cryptocurrency account may have leaked due to prior data breaches. In fact, during the incident, the brothers were frequently in contact with a mysterious third party, who provided them with instructions regarding account balances and additional accounts.

In recent years, "ransom attacks" targeting cryptocurrency holders have been on the rise globally, using physical violence and threats to force individuals to surrender private keys or funds. According to investigations by blockchain analysis firms, there has been a sharp increase in malicious cases involving home invasions, highlighting the need for security measures in the Web3 space that go beyond mere digital defenses to include the protection of personal information and preparedness against physical threats.
