The US imposes tariffs of up to 100% on imports of Russian oil and gas

The law passed in the US regarding "hellish sanctions" against Russia allows for the imposition of tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil and gas, which will affect China, India, and Turkey. In the first eight months of 2026, China imported 585 million barrels of crude oil from Russia, India - 453 million barrels, and Turkey - 44 million barrels. Hungary and Slovakia are also potentially included in the list. The law provides for exceptions, and the US president can waive the tariffs with Congress approval. Vlasuk noted that from January to August 2026, France imported 4.3 million tons of Russian LNG, Belgium - 3.06 million tons, and Spain - 2.77 million tons. The EU has already adopted a phased ban on imports of Russian gas, which will come into effect on January 1, 2027, for LNG and on September 30, 2027, for pipeline gas. This will create risks of applying tariffs to European buyers depending on their compliance with import reduction obligations. For Ukraine, the law may mean restrictions on companies assisting Russia in arms production.
