PayPal to Lay Off 251 Employees, Effective October 30, 2026
PayPal has announced that it will lay off 251 employees at its San Jose headquarters. The layoffs are part of a restructuring due to the reorganization of its payment, consumer finance, and virtual asset businesses, affecting technical and product roles including senior software engineers, software engineering managers, and product management directors. The layoffs will take effect on October 30, 2026. PayPal stated in its strategic organizational restructuring announced on April 29 that it will reorganize the company into three business units: checkout solutions and PayPal, consumer finance services and Venmo, and payment services and virtual assets. The virtual asset business will be operated alongside the payment services. In its Q2 10-Q filing, PayPal explained that this restructuring includes realignment of operational structures and the introduction of AI and automation, aiming for a total annualized savings effect of at least $1.5 billion over the next 2-3 years. Some measures are expected to be completed by the end of this year. PayPal aims to reduce cross-border remittance and payment settlement costs through PYUSD, with workforce adjustments also taking place in India and Ireland. The market has raised concerns about cost-cutting and slowing growth, and PayPal's stock has shown a downward trend following reports of halted acquisition efforts.
