Twitch Faces Class Action Lawsuit for Unauthorized Use of Streamer Content

The well-known game streaming platform Twitch is facing a class action lawsuit for using streamers' live broadcasts, clips, chat logs, and photos to train its parent company Amazon's generative AI model without the streamers' consent and without compensation. The plaintiff, Warren Pandiscia, a streamer with approximately 1,000 followers, filed a 37-page complaint last week in the Northern District of California, accusing Twitch of violating implied agreements with creators and state unfair competition laws. This lawsuit confirms for the first time that Amazon is indeed using Twitch content to train its AI models. Amazon acquired Twitch in 2014 for nearly $1 billion and has been increasing its investment in AI to catch up with competitors like Google and Meta. It is currently unclear when Amazon began collecting this data or how much content has been used for model training.
