Vitalik Buterin Warns About the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Cryptography
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted the potential effects of artificial intelligence on cryptographic systems. In the next two years, AI-supported mathematical research could reduce the resilience of some encryption methods that are currently considered secure. Buterin pointed out that not only methods vulnerable to quantum computers are at risk, but also systems based on mathematical problems that can be solved by AI. He expressed that it is possible for AI to achieve mathematical advancements that would normally take 50 years within just two years. This situation could lead to the emergence of unknown weaknesses in lattice-based cryptographic systems. Buterin noted that there is a prevailing view that elliptic curve cryptography is at risk, while hash functions and lattice-based systems are considered secure. However, he emphasized that AI-supported research could undermine the security of lattice-based cryptography. One of the reasons for Ethereum's shift towards hash-based cryptography is these risks. Buterin advised users not to rush to change their existing wallets and to be cautious of the potential for weakening.
