Wells Fargo to Launch Tokenized Deposits for Clients
Wells Fargo (WFC) will introduce tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients later this year, beginning with 24/7 U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions on its blockchain. The bank aims to enhance settlement speed and programmability while maintaining existing deposit protections. The initial rollout will expand to more clients, countries, and currencies by 2027. The system will automatically route eligible payments through tokenized deposits to improve speed and flexibility, without altering client interactions. Tokenized deposits will represent conventional bank balances on a blockchain, retaining regulatory protections and deposit-insurance eligibility. Future features may include conditional payments via smart contracts. The platform could also support custodial wallets and connections to other blockchains, integrating with a shared tokenized-deposit network developed by The Clearing House. Wells Fargo joins JPMorgan and Citi in offering institutional tokenized-deposit services amid competition from stablecoins. This rollout follows Wells Fargo's trademark application for WFUSD, potentially linked to a deposit token or stablecoin. The bank has been developing blockchain payment systems since at least 2019, including Wells Fargo Digital Cash for internal transfers and settling foreign-exchange transactions with HSBC.
