WhatsApp Will No Longer Be Free for Businesses Starting October 2026: Key Changes from Meta

WhatsApp will no longer be free for businesses starting October 1, 2026. The change will affect companies that use the app to respond to user inquiries, whether through employees, their own bots, or third-party artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

This modification is part of a strategy by Meta to monetize WhatsApp Business after several years of service expansion. This model adds to another change that began in August, when it started charging for messages generated by its own AI agent, Meta Business Agent.

Starting October 1, 2026, businesses will begin to pay for each message sent within an open conversation with a user. Until now, these responses were free.

The new scheme distinguishes between two usage modalities. For companies using the Meta Business Agent, charges will be made through a system based on tokens, which are units used to measure AI processing. The established rate is $2 for every million tokens used.

According to estimates from InfoNegocios regarding the typical operation of these tools, an AI-generated response can consume between 20,000 and 25,000 tokens, representing an approximate cost of between 4 and 5 cents per message.

The final value will depend on the number of exchanges in each conversation. For example, a simple inquiry requiring four responses could represent a cost of around 16 to 20 cents, while a more extensive one, with about ten chats, could reach between 40 and 50 cents.

On the other hand, for companies that use their own support systems, such as human operators or external AI tools, Meta will apply charges per message sent. This proposal is similar to those already existing for certain categories of commercial chats, such as utility and authentication.

The price may vary by country and the market in which the company operates. An example mentioned in InfoNegocios indicates that a company managing about 10,000 low-complexity messages could incur a cost of approximately $268 using its own solution, while with Meta Business Agent, the expense could range between $400 and $500, depending on the level of interaction.

Maximiliano Gaviglio, Operations Manager at Teleprom, explained to the aforementioned media: "Meta has spent the last five to seven years positioning the Business API as an efficient option for companies to contact their users. It has already proven to companies that the channel works - you go from a 15% contact rate in traditional channels to an 84 or 85% in WhatsApp. Now, in that context, it is starting to monetize it."

Experts recommend that companies prepare their systems before October to reduce costs. Among the main strategies are simplifying support journeys, resolving inquiries with fewer messages, and using automated tools to answer frequently asked questions.

They also advise analyzing which type of solution is most convenient for each business, as the final cost will depend on the volume of conversations, the complexity of inquiries, and the system used to respond.

"The channel remains more economical and effective than traditional alternatives. Most operations continue to justify their existence by the value of contact," Gaviglio noted.

According to the specialist, the change does not imply the elimination of the service or a loss of utility for companies: "This is not a crisis or a setback. It is an update of the business model in line with the value that the channel has already demonstrated. The key is to optimize the engineering and the art of conversation.
