$10 Billion in Crypto Vaults Under Regulatory Scrutiny
Cryptocurrency holders are turning to lending products to generate income without selling their assets. The value of assets held in digital vaults has risen from around $4 billion at the beginning of last year to over $10 billion. Individual investors, fintech companies, and hedge funds are utilizing these products. However, this growth has come under the scrutiny of regulatory bodies in the U.S. and Europe. Crypto vaults operate as pools where investors can leverage their cryptocurrencies in a common lending strategy. Users deposit stablecoins like USDT into the vault, and these assets are used in lending transactions. Returns typically range from 3% to 10% annually, with strategies that take on more risk potentially offering returns of 20% or higher. However, the nature of the collateral used in lending transactions is crucial for the investor's ability to reclaim their funds. When the market declines, the value of collateral can drop, and automatic liquidation processes may increase selling pressure. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has raised questions regarding vaults that hold securities. In Europe, there are proposals to regulate intermediaries that provide access to decentralized finance products.
