18th Anniversary of Bitcoin White Paper: Wall Street Embraces Crypto Assets

By: www.bloomberg.com|10/31/2026 02:27:09

On October 31, 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto released the Bitcoin white paper, proposing a peer-to-peer electronic payment system that does not require banks or central authorities. Over the past 18 years, Bitcoin has evolved from a fringe experiment into an asset class recognized by Wall Street and institutional investors. The crypto winter of 2022 led to a loss of over $2 trillion in market value for digital assets, with $19 billion in leveraged positions liquidated in a single day last October. Currently, Bitcoin's price hovers around $80,000, facing its worst month since June. The Bitcoin ETF launched by BlackRock has reached approximately $66 billion in size, and several publicly traded companies have included Bitcoin on their balance sheets, while traditional financial institutions are actively investing in stablecoins, asset tokenization, and blockchain financial infrastructure. However, Bitcoin, which was initially intended to challenge the centralized financial system, is now increasingly accepted by traditional financial institutions.
