Adam Back, the 'Satoshi Candidate', Faces Turmoil in Bitcoin Empire Amid $320 Million Hack and Lawsuits

[Block Media Reporter Myung Jeong-seon] Adam Back, known as an early Bitcoin cryptographer, is facing a series of challenges with the digital asset ventures he is involved in. Following a hacking incident involving $320 million in Bitcoin linked to Blockstream, the company he co-founded, legal disputes surrounding mining operations have also emerged. Additionally, a $4 billion Bitcoin treasury project that Back promoted has collapsed.

Back became a symbolic figure in the industry after his research was cited in the white paper published by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. Speculation that he might be Satoshi has persisted, but Back stated on X in April this year, "I am not Satoshi."

Back's name appears not only in Blockstream but also across Bitcoin mining and treasury operations. Although his roles vary across these ventures, his standing in the Bitcoin industry is being tested as hacking incidents, lawsuits, and failed transactions continue to plague related companies and projects.

$320 Million Hack on Liquid Network

The most significant blow occurred in the 'Liquid Network' launched by Blockstream in 2018. Liquid is a Bitcoin-linked blockchain network designed to enhance the efficiency of Bitcoin transactions.

Recently, approximately 4,000 BTC were stolen from Liquid. The estimated damage amounts to about $320 million based on the price at the time. The hackers claimed their actions were part of a so-called 'white hat' activity to expose security vulnerabilities in the network, returning 3,400 BTC of the stolen amount.

However, about $47 million worth of Bitcoin was not returned. Blockstream stated, "Holding $47 million worth of Bitcoin is not a white hat activity; it is theft."

Following the incident, the Liquid Network temporarily halted operations to address technical issues, resuming services a few days later.

Legal Disputes in $2 Billion Mining Operations

The Bitcoin mining operations, which were separated from Blockstream, are also facing ongoing issues.

Blockstream entered the mining business after launching as a Bitcoin infrastructure company in 2014 but separated it into Blockstream Mining about two years ago. Michael Mincberg, CEO of Blockstream, explained that the capital-intensive nature of mining operations did not align with the company's core infrastructure business.

Blockstream Mining subsequently partnered with Exacore, run by Back's long-time business partner Chris Cook. Exacore raised approximately $2 billion through bond sales linked to investment and Bitcoin mining production.

However, recent reports indicate layoffs and legal disputes over unpaid bills and contract issues.

Energy infrastructure company Giga Energy filed a lawsuit in February, claiming Exacore failed to honor a contract for purchasing mining equipment. Electrical contractor BLS Electrical also claimed they had not received about $1 million in construction and equipment payments and initiated legal action.

Power company Excel Energy filed a lawsuit, stating that approximately $1.1 million in electricity bills had not been paid. Exacore has disputed some of these claims.

While Back is not part of Exacore's management, he is known to hold a minority stake in Blockstream Mining. He also served as a technical advisor for Blockstream Mining but has since stepped down from that role.

Bonds issued based on Blockstream's mining operations are also of interest to the market. The 'Blockstream Mining Note' issued in 2021 recorded high returns by paying over 1,200 BTC at maturity.

The issuance target for the subsequent product, BMN2, launched in 2024, was initially set at $200 million but has been expanded several times due to investment demand, now aiming for $2 billion by 2025.

However, digital asset valuation firm Particula assessed that the repayment ability for BMN2 investors relies partially on the revenue generated from basic Bitcoin mining assets.

$4 Billion Bitcoin Treasury Project Also Fails

The Bitcoin treasury company BSTR project, which Back actively promoted, has also failed.

BSTR aimed to secure approximately $4 billion worth of Bitcoin and sought to merge with a special purpose acquisition company linked to Cantor Fitzgerald.

However, in July, the existing transaction conditions were discarded. Both parties discussed new terms reflecting market conditions, but ultimately, Cantor announced the termination of the deal at the end of August. Cantor indicated that BSTR would need to pay $15 million to the special purpose acquisition company in this process.

These adverse developments coincided with the digital asset market undergoing corrections since last year's peak. Bitcoin has recently rebounded over the past month, but it remains about 30% lower than its all-time high recorded last year.

The equity structure and management involvement of each venture related to Adam Back vary. Blockstream has also clarified that it has "no operational involvement or partnership with Exacore and has no equity or contractual relationship."

However, as Blockstream's security incidents, legal disputes surrounding mining operations, and the collapse of a large Bitcoin treasury project continue, the market's attention is increasingly focused on Back's business activities, which have built influence since the early days of Bitcoin.
