Alibaba's ModelScope Competes with MoArk in Open Source Model Platforms
Alibaba launched its open-source model platform ModelScope in 2022, which currently hosts over 170,000 models and has 250 million users. OSChina launched MoArk in 2023, hosting around 20,000 commonly used models, both of which fall short of Hugging Face's 3 million open models. In 2023, Chinese regulators blocked Hugging Face without disclosing specific reasons but allowed AI labs to bypass the blockade and share Chinese models globally. OSChina's CEO Xu Yong stated that China needs to establish an independent AI ecosystem that serves Chinese users, and emphasized that MoArk's mission is to ensure mainstream open models are compatible with Chinese chips. Both platforms offer some services for free, while additional computing power and premium features are charged. ModelScope also hosts university hackathons and provides co-working and event spaces for AI entrepreneurs in Hangzhou.
