Argentina Increased 1% in May, Housing and Services Rose 52.7% Since 2023
Argentina increased by 1% in dollars in May, accumulating a 4.5% rise during Javier Milei's government, according to data from Fundar. In comparison, Latin America had an increase of 0.7%, meaning Argentina became 0.3 percentage points more expensive than the region. The key expenses that rose the most are housing and services, with an increase of 52.7%, communications at 28.4%, education at 13.6%, and transportation at 7.3%. Despite many categories becoming cheaper since November 2023, such as clothing (-37%), food (-14.7%), recreation (-18%), and household equipment (-24.4%), Argentina remains more expensive than the regional average in restaurants, clothing, communications, recreation, household equipment, and transportation. In May, prices in pesos increased by 2.1%, while the official dollar rose by 1.1%. Inflation in Argentina exceeds the increase in the exchange rate, putting pressure on prices in hard currency. In April, Argentina had become 3.6% more expensive in dollars, but in May the trend reversed, becoming more expensive than its neighbors.
