DeepSeek Engineer Claims AI Will Surpass Human Operator Coding Ability
DeepSeek operator engineer Liu Sheng discussed the impact of AI on work, stating that the main Attention operator of DeepSeek V4.1 was written by him, but he expects that within six months to a year, AI's ability to write operators will catch up to and even surpass his own. Currently, AI can read CUDA, PTX, and SASS, analyze instruction stall times, and independently optimize operators. Liu believes that AI will further design scheduling schemes, evaluate performance, and complete implementations. He realizes that the better the operator optimization, the faster the DeepSeek model training and inference will be, and AI will also catch up to him more quickly. Although he judges that he is unlikely to lose his job, he may transition to becoming a "mecha pilot" controlling agents. What he finds hardest to accept is the possibility of losing the opportunity to do work he enjoys, believing that "talent may be buried in yesterday." Liu stays at DeepSeek because he hopes that cutting-edge AI can be provided openly and affordably to everyone, and he expresses skepticism about the capabilities of Anthropic and OpenAI, worrying that the strongest AI will be controlled by a few companies, leading to increased technological disparities and creating power and class gaps.
