Developer Uses AI to Recreate Satoshi's Original Bitcoin Software

A developer known as T4T5 has successfully reconstructed the original Bitcoin software using Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5. The rebuilt bitcoin.exe matched the original file's SHA-256 hash exactly, with every byte aligning perfectly. The original software was complex and not designed for reproducibility, requiring T4T5 to create a development environment using software from 2006 to 2008. The project reveals that Satoshi Nakamoto used Windows XP with MinGW GCC 3.4.5, compiled most of Bitcoin in debug mode, and optimized the hashing code for mining. The executable known as Bitcoin 0.1.0 was actually version 0.1.1, compiled on January 10, 2009, two days after Bitcoin's public announcement. No verified copy of the January 8 launch-day executable is known to exist. This reconstruction provides evidence that the preserved 2009 software aligns with Satoshi's published source code, offering Bitcoin historians a reproducible record of the early software's development. However, the original launch-day program remains missing, and the search continues.
