ECB President Lagarde to Step Down on February 7, 2027

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027. Lagarde informed the ECB's Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa today. She is the fourth president of the ECB and the second from France, with her term originally set to end in October 2027. The successor will be appointed by the European Council following the nomination procedure outlined in Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, responsible for setting interest rate policies for the 21 member countries of the Eurozone, affecting over 350 million people. Spain's Pablo Hernández de Cos and the Netherlands' Klaas Knot are competing for the position, with de Cos considered the strongest candidate.
