Ethereum (ETH) derivative activity has largely remained in a range over the past week, as traders show little conviction following a slight shift towards seller dominance.
The Net Taker Volume remains slightly negative, while Open Interest has struggled to maintain growth.
Funding rates, however, continue to favor long positions, creating a mixed picture where sellers control immediate market order activity but bullish expectations have not disappeared.
The price of Ethereum reflects the same uncertainty, trading within a narrow range formed by its short- and medium-term exponential moving averages (EMAs).
Ethereum's Net Taker Volume slightly shifted into negative territory at the beginning of August and has remained there.
The indicator calculates the difference between market buy and sell volumes in perpetual futures on ETH.
A negative value means that sell orders outnumber buy orders, signaling greater aggressiveness among bearish traders.
However, the difference between buying and selling activity has remained modest over the past two weeks. This suggests that neither side has established decisive control over the market.
Historically, prolonged periods of negative Net Taker Volume for ETH have been accompanied by price declines, including the downturns recorded in January and May.
A further shift towards more negative territory could therefore increase downward pressure.
Ethereum's Open Interest showed limited movements over the past week, indicating that substantial capital has remained on the sidelines.
Open Interest rose slightly to $25.94 billion on Monday, up from $24 billion recorded the previous day.
The increase suggests that traders have opened new positions, but the overall trend still reflects weak participation compared to previous periods.
Open Interest represents the total value of outstanding derivative contracts.
A sustained increase generally indicates greater trader involvement, while a decrease suggests that participants are closing positions or reducing exposure.
Additionally, Ethereum's funding rate remained positive at approximately 0.0049% on Monday.
A positive funding rate means that traders with long positions pay those with short positions, indicating that bullish positions maintain a slight edge in the perpetual futures market.
The combination of weak Open Interest at the beginning of the week and positive funding rates suggests that overall participation remains limited, even as active traders show a modest preference for further gains.
Taken together, the derivative indicators present a mixed picture.
The Net Taker Volume reflects a slight predominance of bears in immediate trading, while funding rates show a slight long bias. Open Interest, on the other hand, indicates a general lack of conviction.
Ethereum remains trapped between key moving averages.
On the daily chart, Ethereum maintains a neutral short-term outlook as it hovers around its 20-day EMA at $1,884.
The 100-day EMA, at around $1,920, continues to cap the upside, leaving ETH compressed in a tight range of technical support and resistance.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 49, while the Stochastic is near 50. Both readings reflect balanced momentum and provide little evidence of an imminent bullish or bearish move.
A sustained breakout above the 100-day EMA at $1,920 could allow Ethereum to test the horizontal resistance level at $1,961. Further gains could target upper resistance zones at $2,172 and $2,431.
On the downside, the 50-day EMA at $1,865 provides initial support. A daily close below this level could extend the decline towards $1,809.
If sellers regain control, more significant support levels at $1,701 and $1,507 could become relevant.
