Ethereum to Allow Gas Fee Payments Without Holding ETH, Considered for 2027 Upgrade

Ethereum is considering a mechanism that would allow users to transact without holding ETH. According to multiple reports, the adoption of EIP-8141, planned for the Hegotá upgrade in 2027, would enable the separation of the entity responsible for paying gas fees from the users conducting transactions.

This is expected to allow applications to pay gas fees on behalf of users in ETH, enabling users to settle using stablecoins or other means.

Separation of Gas Fee Payer and Transaction User in EIP-8141

Ethereum core developers are reportedly advancing the development of EIP-8141 "Frame Transactions" for incorporation into the Hegotá upgrade scheduled for 2027.

During the all-core developers meeting on August 27, 2026, the status of this proposal was changed from "under consideration" to "planned for adoption." However, EIP-8141 is still in the draft stage, and technical specifications and adoption plans may change before implementation. The official proposal also positions EIP-8141 as a draft.

Currently, Ethereum requires ETH for gas fees when conducting regular transactions. Therefore, even if users hold tokens like stablecoins in their wallets, they may not be able to execute transactions without ETH.

EIP-8141 will divide transactions into multiple "frames" for authentication, gas fee payment, and actual processing. This will allow a different account from the one initiating the transaction to bear the gas fees.

For example, a payment application could pay network fees in ETH on behalf of the user, receiving stablecoins from the user in return. Fees to validators would still be paid through the traditional Ethereum fee structure, eliminating the need for users to prepare ETH in advance.

Integrating Account Abstraction into the Protocol, Enabling Batch Processing of Multiple Operations

EIP-8141 also aims to directly integrate account abstraction features into Ethereum's standard transaction system.

Additionally, it is designed to support "atomic batches," which process multiple operations together, ensuring that either all related operations succeed or, in the event of failure, all are rolled back. The official specifications outline a mechanism for treating related frames as a single batch, reverting the state to before the operation if any part fails.

Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-authors of the proposal and co-founder of Ethereum, has called attention to significant developments regarding EIP-8141 in recent months, urging focus on the updated specifications.

EIP-8141 may also incorporate a mechanism for programming verification methods for each account, potentially leading to support for key rotation and future different signing methods. However, as of now, specification development and implementation/testing are ongoing, and there remains a possibility of changes to the content, including its adoption in the 2027 Hegotá upgrade.
