A survey conducted in April this year revealed that nearly two-thirds of American voters hold a negative view of the cryptocurrency industry rather than a positive one.

CoinDesk commissioned a nationwide poll in April, asking respondents a series of questions, including their views on cryptocurrencies. The questionnaire included an open-ended question: "Why do you have a (positive/negative) impression of cryptocurrencies?"

An April poll showed that 63% of American voters have a negative view of cryptocurrencies.

The poll collected 849 valid responses: 533 respondents expressed distrust towards the industry, while only 316 held a positive view, with the negative responses accounting for nearly two-thirds. Respondents from the Republican camp had relatively mixed attitudes, while those identifying as Democrats largely criticized cryptocurrencies, with 233 expressing negative views and only 88 being optimistic about digital assets.

Independent voters also tended to have a negative view: 88 gave negative evaluations, while 54 provided positive feedback.

Views of Cryptocurrency Supporters

Respondents who held a favorable view of cryptocurrencies provided various reasons for their support. A young voter leaning towards the Republican Party and supporting Donald Trump in the 2024 election stated, "Cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, have made me a lot of money, and they are transparent and secure."

Voters' views on cryptocurrencies depend on their political party affiliation.

Many supporters mentioned investment returns as a source of their positive feelings, with some respondents believing that cryptocurrencies can hedge against dollar risks.

Some respondents expressed that they view cryptocurrencies as "a safe way to exchange currency," "a safer form of currency," or a good investment. One respondent noted that outside the U.S., it is an effective tool for hedging against inflation.

Respondents spanned all age groups, but overall, younger voters were more likely to have a positive view of cryptocurrencies compared to older voters. However, the 18-24 age group was an exception: 20 individuals in this group held a positive view, while 24 had a negative view. In contrast, older voters, especially those over 55, showed a significantly stronger negative inclination.

Views of Cryptocurrency Skeptics

Among respondents who held negative views of the cryptocurrency industry, some believed that cryptocurrency investments are risky, poorly regulated, not real money, or merely a passing trend. Others indicated that using cryptocurrencies to pay for goods is very difficult.

Many respondents openly expressed distrust towards cryptocurrencies and were concerned about fraud risks. A Democratic-leaning respondent who did not participate in the 2024 election wrote, "Cryptocurrency prices are highly volatile, lack regulation, and there are many types of cryptocurrencies; I worry that I will end up with less money than I initially invested."

Another frequently mentioned concern was that respondents felt they lacked sufficient understanding of cryptocurrencies, making it difficult to develop a favorable impression. Many were worried about forgetting their private key passwords, leading to the total loss of their assets.

One Republican voter attributed their negative reasons to "religious beliefs" but did not elaborate further. Additionally, some respondents expressed concerns that the government could track users' funds and seize assets, which also contributed to their aversion to cryptocurrencies. Several respondents directly mentioned that Donald Trump and his family are involved in various cryptocurrency-related business ventures, which is a primary reason for their negative perception of the industry.

With the U.S. midterm elections approaching, multiple polls and prediction markets indicate that the Democratic Party is more likely to have an advantage in this election. The Cook Political Report predicts that control of the House of Representatives is likely to change hands, while the Senate seat contests remain uncertain.
