HSBC Launches Stablecoin RedCoin for 3.3 Million PayMe Users
HSBC has launched the stablecoin RedCoin, allowing over 3.3 million PayMe users to make payments to 100,000 merchants. HSBC Hong Kong's CEO, Anna Wong, stated that funds, assets, and information are transitioning to digital networks. HSBC's Head of Retail Banking Products, Li Kwan-hong, mentioned that the transaction speed of RedCoin is consistent with the existing PayMe wallet and offers additional benefits for merchants. To celebrate the launch of RedCoin, users can receive transaction vouchers and rewards. John O'Neill, Managing Director of HSBC Digital Assets and Currency, indicated that a stablecoin wallet feature will be added to the HSBC Hong Kong mobile banking app within the year, enabling users to use RedCoin to subscribe to tokenized investment products, with a minimum subscription amount of HKD 100. HSBC has collaborated with regulators and potential users to advance the launch of RedCoin, with nearly a hundred employees participating in a pilot to test the complete process. HSBC plans to expand use cases for corporate and institutional clients and introduce more products.
