iGaming Tokens Need Real Revenue, Not Just Hype
Crypto casinos and betting platforms have not been shy about launching tokens. But what keeps those tokens relevant once the launch campaign, airdrops and exchange listings are over?
One of the easiest ways to manufacture activity around a token was to spend the token treasury itself. Projects could distribute rewards, subsidize staking yields, fund liquidity or announce buybacks using capital raised during the token sale. It's all fine and dandy when the reserves are large. But reserves are finite. Once incentives shrink, the model has to stand on something else.
For iGaming tokens, that "something else" is the business underneath them.
A gaming platform has an advantage over many crypto projects because it can generate revenue from an existing service. Players wager, the platform earns revenue, and part of that revenue can potentially be recycled into a token economy. In that model, the token is connected to activity taking place outside the token market itself.
That's what sits at the center of the model being developed for $1WIN, the upcoming Solana-based token from 1win. The company has operated since 2016 and says its wider platform now serves more than 30 million registered players across more than 100 countries. Its business already spans casino games, sportsbook and esports, affiliate distribution and crypto payments. The token is being introduced into that existing ecosystem rather than being relied upon to create it.
According to 1win's current token design, $1WIN will have a fixed supply of one billion tokens. Regular open-market buybacks are intended to be funded from gaming revenue rather than from a stockpile of tokens reserved for market support. The platform also plans to burn 10% of $1WIN spent through supported products, permanently reducing supply as the token is used. 1win has publicly described buybacks and token burns as two separate parts of its planned token economy.
The difference between those two sources of buybacks is easy to miss, but important. A reserve-funded program moves assets that already belong to the project. It may create temporary demand, but every purchase reduces the remaining reserve. A revenue-funded model instead depends on whether the underlying business continues producing revenue. If it does, the mechanism has a recurring economic input.
It still is not a guarantee of token performance. Revenue can rise or fall, token demand can change, and buyback-and-burn mechanics do not automatically make an asset valuable. What they can do is make the economics easier to interrogate. Users thus ask whether the product is actually being used and whether the promised mechanism is being executed.
$1WIN is also designed to push a large part of its supply toward participation rather than simply selling it to the market. Under the current allocation, 25% is reserved for game reward pools, 18% for wager rewards and 8% for its Telegram Mini App distribution. Together, those programs account for 51% of the fixed supply.
The wager system is intended to reward crypto gaming activity, while the token itself is being built as a native SPL asset on Solana for use across gaming, lottery and other platform functions. The smart contracts have also undergone security assessments. Halborn's published September assessment reported no critical or high-severity findings and said all reported findings had been addressed.
There is a broader lesson here for iGaming. Adding a token to a casino does not automatically create a crypto economy. If rewards, liquidity and buybacks are all financed from the same finite pool raised at launch, the token can become an expensive customer-acquisition campaign with an expiry date.
The more credible model starts somewhere less glamorous: with customers, products and cash flow that exist regardless of the token.
That is why revenue-backed token mechanics are worth watching. The test for $1WIN will come after launch, when its buybacks, burns and user rewards can be measured against actual platform activity. But the premise is a healthier one for the sector. A token should strengthen a working business, not be the thing keeping the business alive.
