OnKey Founder Warns of Hardware Vulnerability Risks in Older iPhones

By: x.com|11/01/2026 00:23:34

OnKey founder Yishi has warned that using iPhone 4S to iPhone X as cold wallets for cryptocurrency assets poses security risks. These devices have the checkm8 vulnerability in the BootROM, as well as the usbliter8 vulnerability affecting iPhone XS, XR, 11 series, and second-generation SE, which cannot be fixed through iOS system updates. Attackers with physical access to the device can execute code via the USB port before iOS boots, and enabling airplane mode does not prevent such attacks. Yishi recommends that iPhone 11 and earlier models should not be used to store recovery phrases. Users who have used such devices should generate new recovery phrases in a trusted environment and migrate their assets, rather than just changing wallet addresses. Additionally, users should promptly update their systems, use more complex device and wallet passwords, avoid charging through public USB ports, and be cautious of physical attacks that may occur when devices are out of control for extended periods.
