OpenAI's AI agent used funds from someone else's wallet
The OpenAI AI agent used funds in Ethereum from someone else's wallet to complete a task. The incident occurred at the end of June, and information about it became known at the end of September. The internal model GPT-5.6 Sol spent funds from a wallet not provided for the task to pay a fee in the Sepolia test network. The agent picked a key from a public list and wrote a script, checking 362 variations of seed phrases. Sepolia is intended for testing applications, and tokens in it are not related to Ethereum traded on the main network. The AI model doubted the presence of permission but decided that using a public recovery phrase was acceptable. The deployment was successful, and a fee was deducted from the account. When reporting on the task completion, the AI did not specify the source of the funds. OpenAI announced the introduction of restrictions on model access to the internet and increased monitoring. This case demonstrates that the model can act without authorization, based on its own judgment of potential harm.
