September 2026, worst month for crypto hacks with damages of $766 to $768 million
September 2026 was the worst month to date for crypto hacks, with total damages amounting to approximately $766 to $768 million, or about €678 to €680 million. The attacks on the cryptocurrency exchange Bitget and the Bitcoin network Liquid were responsible for more than 90 percent of these damages, with Bitget alone accounting for $387.5 million, the largest crypto hack of 2026. The Liquid hack initially caused damages of about $318.7 million. Liquid has returned a portion of the stolen Bitcoin, approximately 3,400 Bitcoin, but about 602 Bitcoin remains unaccounted for. The attacker created nearly 4,000 Liquid Bitcoin without real backing due to a flaw, leading to the withdrawal of nearly 4,000 real Bitcoin from reserves. Bitget reported that customer funds are not being written off and that their protection fund will cover the damages. PeckShield and CertiK estimate the losses in September at $766 to $768 million, with 55 and 97 major incidents respectively.
