$20 Billion Tariff Dispute Expands to Automotive and Steel Sectors
After the breakdown of trade negotiations between the United States and Canada, a conflict over a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of goods has expanded to the automotive and steel sectors. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer blamed Canada for the failure of negotiations, claiming that Canada made additional demands at the last moment. He explained that the U.S. had proposed to halve tariffs on steel and aluminum and significantly reduce tariffs on automobiles during the negotiation process. In contrast, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney countered that the U.S. had presented conditions that were difficult for Canada to accept. Canada plans to implement retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel, appliances, and dairy products on a dollar-for-dollar basis starting September 8. Following the breakdown of negotiations on the 21st, the U.S. imposed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, including dairy products and lumber. President Donald Trump announced that a 50% tariff would be applied to Canadian automobiles, trucks, automotive parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027. This could impact the North American supply chain.
