Fixed-term deposits in dollars: what you earn by investing $2,000
Fixed-term deposits in dollars are an alternative for those who have savings in U.S. currency and seek to obtain additional returns without parting with their dollars. Unlike other investments, they allow you to know in advance the agreed rate and the amount that will be received at maturity.
However, the rates offered by banks for dollar deposits are usually considerably lower than those of traditional fixed-term deposits in pesos. Additionally, the return depends on the institution, the channel used to establish the investment, and the chosen period.
For example, taking as a reference the current rates from Banco Nación for individuals who establish the deposit through electronic channels, a fixed-term deposit in dollars of between 30 and 59 days offers a TNA of 1.25%. With that rate, it is possible to calculate how much a $2,000 investment would generate over 30 days.
Analysts prioritize Argentine dollar-denominated bonds, under New York law and with a focus on the energy sector, to reinvest the payments of Bonares and Globals and distribute the collections throughout the year.
The rates for fixed-term deposits in dollars vary by bank and can also change according to the term. At Banco Nación, the current rate for deposits of 30 to 59 days is 1.25% TNA, while for longer periods it progressively increases.
In that institution, deposits of 60 to 89 days have a TNA of 1.50%; those of 90 to 179 days, 1.90%; those of 180 to 269 days, 2.75%; and those of 270 to 364 days, 3.25%. For even longer terms, from 365 to 720 days, the reported rate reaches 4.50%.
Therefore, before making the operation, it is important to consult the rate that each bank offers for the chosen term. There are also differences between establishing the deposit at a branch or doing it through digital means, so the comparison can modify the final return.
If $2,000 is placed for 30 days at a TNA of 1.25%, the approximate calculation of the interest is $2.05. Thus, at the end of the period, around $2,002.05 would be received, as long as those conditions are maintained and the mentioned reference rate is used.
The calculation arises from applying the proportional TNA to the period: $2,000 × 1.25% × 30/365. The result shows that the monthly return of a fixed-term deposit in dollars is limited, although it allows for interest to be added to the capital without assuming the inherent variations of other investment alternatives.
It is important to clarify that this example takes as a reference the electronic rate of Banco Nación valid for the range of 30 to 59 days and does not necessarily represent the offer of all banks. Rates can change, and each institution sets its own conditions.
The basic mechanism is similar: the saver deposits a certain amount of money, selects a term, and upon maturity, receives the initial capital plus the generated interest. Both Banco Nación and Santander offer this traditional modality in pesos and dollars, although with specific conditions for each currency.
The main difference lies in the currency in which the investment is established and collected, in addition to the available rates. In a fixed-term deposit in dollars, the capital and interest are expressed in dollars; in one in pesos, the return is calculated on the capital deposited in national currency. Therefore, it is not enough to compare only the interest percentage.
It is also necessary to consider the availability of the money. In the traditional fixed-term deposit, the capital remains immobilized until the maturity date: for example, Banco Nación establishes a minimum term of 30 days for this modality. Therefore, before investing, it is advisable to choose a period that does not compromise funds that may be needed before maturity.
