Space-based Bitcoin mining technically possible, remains uneconomical

Mining Bitcoin with solar power in space is technically feasible but not economically viable at present. Tesla CEO Elon Musk's mention of space data centers highlights the potential for solar power to significantly lower electricity costs for mining operations. However, the high costs of launching equipment into orbit and the need for specialized cooling systems pose significant challenges. In space, heat cannot dissipate through air, necessitating additional cooling equipment and radiators. Current launch costs are approximately 1500 dollars per kilogram, translating to about 1.5 million dollars to send one metric ton of mining equipment into orbit, excluding the costs of the equipment, cooling infrastructure, solar panels, and maintenance. While space-based mining could become more cost-effective with reduced launch costs and advancements in mining efficiency and cooling technology, ground-based mining remains the more practical choice for now.
