TSMC Insists on Control Over Chip Production Operations, Negotiating Partnership with Terafab

TSMC is in talks to collaborate with Elon Musk's Terafab project, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining operational control over chip production. TSMC CEO C.C. Wei stated that the company must be responsible for the operation of its fabs. Musk has indicated that TSMC can only lease capacity at most, without being responsible for the production operations of the factories. Wei reiterated during a conference call that the fabs must be operated by TSMC. Musk, on the other hand, stated that Terafab will be fully operated by its own companies. Currently, both parties have not disclosed any specific terms of potential cooperation. TSMC pointed out in its earnings call that customers are not allowed to sublease capacity.
