Hong Kong and 9 other regions have cracked down on cross-border fraud and money laundering, arresting over 3,000 people, with some of the illicit funds converted into stablecoins

Zgodnie z komunikatem prasowym Specjalnego Regionu Administracyjnego Hongkong, tamtejsza policja ogłosiła, że dołączyła do organów ścigania z 9 krajów i regionów, w tym Singapuru, Korei Południowej i Tajlandii, aby zwalczać transgraniczne oszustwa i pranie brudnych pieniędzy. Operacja trwała od 10 marca do 7 maja i doprowadziła do aresztowania 3018 osób w związku z ponad 138 000 przypadków oszustw, których łączna wartość strat wyniosła około 752 mln USD (ok. 5,89 mld HKD).

W trakcie operacji organy ścigania zamroziły łącznie 101 989 rachunków bankowych i skutecznie przejęły około 161 mln USD (ok. 1,26 mld HKD) pochodzących z oszustw. Policja w Hongkongu aresztowała 870 osób i zabezpieczyła około 539 mln HKD. Największa sprawa dotyczyła singapurskiej firmy, którą oszukano na 36 mln USD (ok. 280 mln HKD), a powiązane środki trafiły następnie na wiele rachunków bankowych w Hongkongu i innych regionach. Około połowa tej kwoty została wymieniona na stablecoiny i rozproszona do różnych portfeli wirtualnych aktywów, z czego policja po namierzeniu zdołała zamrozić 20 mln USD.

Dochodzenia wykazują, że pranie brudnych pieniędzy za pośrednictwem platform wirtualnych aktywów przybiera na sile, dlatego różne regiony muszą w dalszym ciągu wzmacniać swoje zdolności reagowania na przestępstwa z wykorzystaniem wirtualnych aktywów poprzez wymianę informacji wywiadowczych i mechanizmy współpracy.
