14 Web3 Domains Excluded from ICANN Application
Unstoppable has excluded 14 types of Web3 top-level domains (TLDs), including .crypto, .bitcoin, and .nft, from the 2026 ICANN new generic top-level domain (gTLD) application. This decision is analyzed to be influenced by concerns over costs and the disclosure of registrant information. On the 25th, Unstoppable announced on its official blog that it only submitted five TLDs—.agi, .robot, .gram, .hub, and .xmr—for the 2026 ICANN new gTLD application round. The TLDs that were not applied for include .crypto, .wallet, .polygon, .nft, .bitcoin, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil, and .blockchain, totaling nine. This also includes TLDs that brand partners decided not to pursue, bringing the total to 14 types excluded from the application. This decision serves as a case study on whether Web3 domains can be used like regular browser addresses, as Web3 domains are used to convert long wallet addresses into human-readable names. The evaluation fee for ICANN's gTLD applications is $227,000 per application, meaning if Unstoppable had applied for all nine TLDs, the basic evaluation fee could reach $2,043,000. The refund request period is from August 25 to September 25, 2026, and refunds apply to domains purchased after the reference date. Unstoppable has narrowed its application scope without completely leaving the ICANN process, focusing on partner-centric TLDs and areas related to AI, privacy, and institutional use.
