Zcash to Implement Post-Quantum Signature Opcodes in January

Zakura, a Zcash full node developer, plans to introduce post-quantum signature opcodes in Zcash by January. These opcodes will enable the network to verify a new type of signature aimed at achieving full post-quantum safe transparent pools with hash-based signatures. Zcash supports shielded payments that conceal sender, recipient, and amount, as well as transparent payments similar to Bitcoin. Zakura's strategy involves rotating wallets to fresh addresses after each transaction to maintain privacy and implementing a hash-based backup signature known as WOTS, which avoids vulnerabilities associated with elliptic-curve cryptography. To address privacy concerns related to address rotation, Zakura employs private information retrieval (PIR), allowing wallets to check balances without revealing which addresses are being queried. This feature will be available this week in the Vizor wallet. The initiative comes amid rising institutional interest in Zcash, including a proposed U.S. ETF linked to the Winklevoss twins and Europe's first Zcash ETP, following an upgrade that increased the speed of private payments.
